Twitter is having a very belated battle of the bands.
On Monday, Twitter user @Toffifay76 stirred up some hot internet drama by posing a question to her followers: “Fleetwood Mac or Chicago?”
The straightforward choice between the two beloved rock groups went viral, and has since racked up more than 1,700 likes and 4,200 responses.
“Chicago!!!!!” voted one enthused devotee of the “If You Leave Me Now,” and “You’re the Inspiration,” artists. “I know ppl will unfollow but I have always hated Stevie Nicks. Her voice is like a fog horn… Don’t @ me!!”
“Fleetwood Mac (BEFORE Buckingham & Nicks) was one of the three greatest English blues/rock guitar/guitarist song factories in history,” voted an opposing listener.
Other Fleetwood fans determined that Chicago didn’t even deserve to be compared to the “Rumours” creators.
“I’m not sure why this question [exists]. These two bands are not in the same league.. Fleetwood Mac! Ask which between Fleetwood Mac and Eagles. Those are the two!” tweeted one critic.
In the end, Fleetwood did indeed get more votes — but not by a landslide.
“Guys!!! I really have enjoyed the responses. Looks like: FM ~ 55%, Chicago ~ 45%, and others ~ 10%. That was a lot of fun,” @Toffifay76 tweeted Monday morning.
This isn’t the first time Fleetwood Mac has gotten an exposure boost from social media recently: A viral TikTok clip of skater Nathan Apodaca drinking cranberry juice and longboarding to the group’s track “Dreams,” brought Fleetwood Mac a spike in sales beginning in September.
“Morning vibe,” skater Nathan Apodaca captioned the original video in which he glugs a large bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice while skating down a freeway and singing along with Stevie Nicks on the hit off of the group’s 1977 album “Rumours.”
Fleetwood Mac formally announced their approval of the clip, the band’s official Twitter account tweeting “We love this!” Mick Fleetwood himself even recreated the viral video. Apodaca later became a legend himself, appearing in a virtual parade after the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
