The Asbury Park Press, the third largest daily newspaper in New Jersey, sparked outrage Sunday with an embarrassing trifecta on its web site with a photo caption that had profanity, misogyny and an ethnic slur all rolled into one.
The caption referred to a “fucking hot nurse” who is “a real JAP” in a photo snapped by Gustavo Martinez Contreras in Lakewood NJ on Feb. 25 and accompanying a story about efforts to bring the vaccine to communities of people of color on the Jersey shore. Martinez Contreras is listed as a mutli-media journalist on the Asbury Park Press web site.
The caption ran above a story on Sunday also by the Martinez Contreras.
The caption of the unnamed health care worker was changed in later editions before the photo was taken down entirely, according to David Wildstein of New Jersey Globe.
“This is beyond the pale and disgusting,” tweeted State Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch) while the photo was still live. “Asbury Park Press needs to provide an explanation and apology ASAP on why and how this was posted.”
But as of Monday morning, neither the Asbury Park Press executive editor Paul D’Ambrosio nor the paper’s corporate parent company, Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain and owner of USA Today, had responded to inquiries from the NY Post.
