Before Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there was Star Wars: Clone Wars. And long before Disney+ created the first live action Star Wars TV series with The Mandalorian, there were the Ewok specials: Caravan of Courage and Ewoks: Battle for Endor. Now almost all of the TV titles made for Star Wars since the premiere of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope are streaming on Disney+. Today’s the day you can finally find Genndy Tartakovsky‘s Clone Wars cartoons on streaming.
When Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars debuted on Cartoon Network in 2003, it was a big deal for a lot of reasons. At the time Tartakovsky was the golden boy of animation and mastermind behind hits Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack. Star Wars was experiencing something of a long-awaited cultural resurgence. Well over a decade after Return of the Jedi concluded the original Star Wars trilogy, George Lucas had returned to the franchise to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker. While Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones, were box office winners, they left many hardcore fans dissatisfied. These films had visual grandeur but skipped a lot of the quirky character moments that defined the original trilogy.
Enter Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars. The first Star Wars animated series since Ewoks and Droids — both of which are also now streaming on Disney+ — Star Wars: Clone Wars attempted to fill in the bellicose events between Episodes II and III. We followed Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on missions, saw the softer side of Padmé Amidala and Anakin’s romance, and got a ton of bitching lightsaber duels. The series was considered canon until Dave Filoni’s CGI series, confusingly titled Star Wars: The Clone Wars, took its place in preferred Star Wars lore. You know, thanks to its sprawling world-building, deep character work, and official status as “canon.”
Whether you’ve never seen the original Clone Wars cartoon or are curious to see if it holds up, you now have the chance to watch Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars on Disney+. Today it joins Caravan of Courage, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, Star Wars: Ewoks Seasons 1 and 2, and The Story of the Faithful Wookiee on the service. While all of these are must-watch titles for completist Star Wars fans, your first priority should be Star Wars: Clone Wars.
