Is the Movie ‘Boogie’ Based on a True Story?

1

Eddie Huang is trying his hand at film with Boogie, a new coming-of-age film about a young basketball player growing up in Queens with dreams of making it big in the NBA. Huang, who is best known as the author of the memoir that inspired Fresh Off the Boat, uses Boogie to tell the story of high schooler Alfred Chin, or Boogie to his friends, who hopes to make it as a professional player and one of the few Asian-Americans in the league.

With Boogie, Huang was inspired by another great coming-of-age story: Good Will Hunting. “I had nothing in common with the main characters besides the fact that they grew up with domestic violence and they became deviant themselves and lashed out at the world,” Huang said in an interview for the Boogie press notes. “This was a defining moment because it dawned on me that you could talk about this stuff. I decided everything I would do going forward would address aspects of my own family situation.”

If you’re wondering, who is Boogie about? Is Boogie based on a true story? And how to watch Boogie, we’ve got answers. Here’s what you need to know about Huang’s new film.

IS BOOGIE BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

No, Boogie is not based on a true story, but it does have some connections to the real life experiences of director Eddie Huang, who grew up as the son of Taiwanese immigrants in Orlando, Florida. In an interview for the Boogie press notes, Huang said he’s “always unpacking my personal stuff in my work,” adding, “The reason why I wanted to make this movie is because I come from a family with a history of domestic violence.”

Huang added that Boogie’s family life is also true to his own story. “Boogie’s situation with his mother was completely my dynamic at home growing up,” Huang said, although he maintains a close relationship with his parents now, despite some violent moments at home in the past. “I still have a lot to uncover and understand about my relationship to my parents and culture and how it contrasts with American values and society, and I think by continuing to examine this friction in my work, my audience will see a reflection of themselves.”

WHO STARS IN THE BOOGIE MOVIE CAST?

Boogie stars Taylor Takahashi as Alfred “Boogie” Chin, Taylour Paige as Eleanor, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Richie, the late rapper Pop Smoke as Monk, Pamelyn Chee as Mrs. Chin, Perry Yung as Mr. Chin, and Mike Moh as Melvin. Boogie also stars Alexa Mareka, Domenick Lombardozzi, Steve Coulter, Charlamagne tha God, and Huang himself.
