What Is Apropos of Nothing?

Following the release of Allen v. Farrow, Allen’s autobiography has been gaining more attention. Released in 2020, the memoir has been described by its publisher as “a candid and comprehensive personal account by Woody Allen of his life, ranging from his childhood in Brooklyn through his acclaimed career in film, theater, television, print and standup comedy, as well as exploring his relationships with family and friends.”

Like all things concerning this director, it came with its fair share of controversy. Apropos of Nothing has been making the publishing rounds for years. It was repeatedly rejected by several publishers due to the sexual abuse allegations against Allen and in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Eventually, in early March of 2020 it was picked up by Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. Ronan and Dylan Farrow later described this announcement of publication as “deeply upsetting” and a “betrayal”, partially because Ronan Farrow’s own book, Catch and Kill, was published by an imprint of Hachette. After public backlash and a walkout from its employees, Hachette dropped the book and returned the rights to Allen.

Apropos of Nothing was then published in late March of 2020 by Arcade Publishing, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing. The book has earned mixed reviews with some praising its humor and others criticizing its depiction of women.
