Will ‘Miss Scarlet and the Duke’ Get a Season 2 on PBS Masterpiece?

1

Miss Scarlet and the Duke, PBS Masterpiece’s hit detective series, has emerged as a fan favorite since it first premiered last month. The period drama stars Downton Abbey‘s Kate Phillips as Eliza Scarlet, the first-ever female detective in Victorian era London. After the death of her father, Eliza has no choice but to keep his detective agency up and running, taking on the job he left behind and finding she’s got quite the knack for it.

Pairing up with Scotland Yard Detective Inspector William Wellington, or The Duke, (Stuart Martin), Eliza begins to solve mysteries around London. While The Duke and Eliza work well together, their relationship also teeters on the edge of something more. Between the romance, mystery, and drama, Miss Scarlet and the Duke has won over a loyal fanbase. The six-part series also stars Andrew Gower, Kevin Doyle, Ansu Kabia, and Cathy Belton.

Now that Season 1 has come to a close, fans are wondering what’s in store for Miss Scarlet and the Duke. Will there be a second season of Miss Scarlet and the Duke on PBS? Here’s what we know about Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2.

WILL THERE BE A SEASON 2 OF MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE?

It’s likely Miss Scarlet and the Duke will return for Season 2, and the IMDb page for the hit series indicates there will be a second season. While the news hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s also been hinted at in interviews with the cast and creators. In a conversation with SalonMiss Scarlet and the Duke creator Rachael New shared some storylines she’s hoping to explore in Season 2.

“I would have lots of things in store for Rupert and how he’d navigate his domineering mother, and try and have some semblance of a happy life. It would be really difficult for him because she’s a very difficult woman. I love Mrs. Parker. We would have more of her in Season 2 as well,” she said. “I would also delve a lot more into where Duke’s come from. Duke came from Glasgow, from really poor beginnings – basically, the Victorian workhouse. He came to London as a kind of scrappy young man, and Henry Scarlet found him probably doing things that he shouldn’t be doing: pickpocketing and robbing and all sorts of things.

“Henry was his mentor, Henry was the one who turned him on to the police,” New added. “That’s when Duke and Eliza would have, their worlds would have orbited each other but also he would have been to her house when they were teenagers.”

WHEN WILL MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE SEASON 2 PREMIERE?

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, work on Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2 has been delayed. IndieWire reports that the series “remains on hold” due to the pandemic, although Season 1 was filmed before the virus began to spread globally. New told IndieWire, “We filmed in 2019 and wrapped in September. I was in Ireland finishing post-production and we delivered [the series] in January. So [COVID] wasn’t an issue at all at the time, nobody had even heard of it at that point.”

Now, both Philips and Martin are used to working through a pandemic, which Phillips described to IndieWire as “the new normal,” and Martin called “a totally different experience.” Still, New isn’t sure when work on Season 2 of Miss Scarlet and the Duke will resume, but we’ll keep you posted with any updates on the series.
